Western Australia is home to around 180 defence related companies employing over 4000 workers, and is ready to play a major role in building and maintaining Australia’s next generation of naval assets. Half of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) fleet is based permanently in Western Australia, including all six of the Collins Class submarines.
Western Australia is also home to the Special Air Services Regiment and Royal Australian Air Force Bases Pearce and Learmonth, which are significant elements of the Australian Defence Force.
The State Government has recently introduced Defence West. Defence West works to facilitate, promote and attract new businesses to the range of specialised manufacturing support services primarily based at the Australian Marine Complex at Henderson. Their role also includes promoting Western Australia’s defence sector capability and capacity to deliver the nation’s future shipbuilding and submarine programs.
Rear Admiral (Rtd) Raydon Gates AO CSM has been appointed the Defence Advocate. His role is to champion the interests of Western Australia's local defence industry while creating jobs for further local engagement.

Through the Minister for Defence Issues, Defence West and the WA Defence Advocate, Western Australia is promoting the State’s defence capabilities and undertaking a range of initiatives to bring a greater share of defence work to the State, across all capability streams including maritime and anti-submarine warfare, land, air, space and amphibious combat; together with intelligence, special operations, surveillance and cyber warfare.
There is significant private and public investment in the State's defence sector primarily in naval shipbuilding, repair and maintenance, upgrade and through-life sustainment.
From 12 - 15 September the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition and conference took place at London's Exel centre. It is the world leading event that brings together the global defence and security sector to innovate and share knowledge. DSEI represents the entire supply chain on an unrivalled scale.
Team Defence Australia (TDA) formed a delegation including over 40 Australian defence companies, members from the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) and the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) and State government representatives, all led by Air Marshal John Harvey.
Blacktree Technology from Western Australian formed part of the TDA delegation. Blacktree Technology assists companies with their communication needs, optimizes existing networks and manages the commissioning of new infrastructure.
