WA Seafood on global stage at Global Seafood Expo 2023

In April 2023, Barcelona hosted the annual Global Seafood Expo which welcomed 2,078 exhibiting companies from 87 countries and 68 national and regional pavilions. The event drew attendance from over 33,000 visitors from across the seafood industry, government, media, producers, buyers and suppliers.

In and amongst the 68 national and regional pavilions, Australia had a large and well decorated stand and strong presence managed by Seafood Industry Australia. Team Australia came together to showcase 15 Australian-wide companies looking to expand or grow within the European region. On the global stage were six Western Australian companies; Austral Fisheries, Far West Scallops, Fremantle Octopus Group, Geraldton Fishermen’s Coop, Rare Foods Australia and Sea Harvest Group each presenting their products to the European market and seeking to engage with potential clients and distributors.

It wasn’t just on the trade show floor where Western Australia was acknowledged for its world-class product. A number of tailored conference sessions and networking activities were organised through the course of the week, including a breakfast and conference session hosted by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Despite being a global audience, Western Australia was referenced on many occasions over the course of the presentation, including references to the number of MSC accredited fisheries in WA – 11 out of a global 460, which equates to around 1.6%.

A key and consistent theme relayed over the course of the week was the increasing importance of sustainability and traceability across the following domains; regulation, financial services and client and customer needs.

The strength of Western Australia’s aquaculture and fisheries sectors were certainly on display at the Global Seafood Expo in Barcelona and we look forward to supporting the growth of these companies into the UK and European region in due course.
