AUKUS deal

The AUKUS Nuclear-Powered Submarine Programme announced 14 March 2023 by Prime Minister Albanese, President Biden and Prime Minister Sunak will be the most transformative industrial endeavour in Australian history.

Included in the announcement is the establishment of the Submarine Rotational Force-West (SRF-West) at HMAS Stirling, Western Australia from as early as 2027 whereby AUKUS partners will have a rotational presence of one UK and up to 4 US nuclear-powered submarines.  Australia has a longstanding bipartisan policy of no foreign bases on Australian soil and activities under SRF-West are consistent with this policy.

The Australian Government will invest up to $8 billion over the next decade to expand HMAS Stirling, creating around 3,000 direct jobs, and in turn supporting the local economy.  This includes:

  • Wharf upgrades
  • Operational maintenance, logistics and training facilities
  • Opportunities for supporting infrastructure outside of HMAS Stirling.

Western Australian education institutions will also play a key role in the development of skilling programmes to support workforce growth.

Australian suppliers interested in offering products and services to support the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Programmes of Australia, United States and United Kingdom are encouraged to register through the ICN Gateway:
